Two brands

Wenger og Victorinox tresag er laget for profesjonelt bruk
Saw angle from the body of the knife. Victorinox 111mm

Victorinox and Wenger philosophies on a large wood saw.

The wood saw is a multiuse function and to have that extra size matters. On the pictures you can see the Wenger and Victorinox 130mm and 111mm category saw.

The construction of the two saws show us a different philosophy on many parts. Both of them are very good.

The teeth are durable and aggressive in the wood.

One part that is extra interesting is the angle of the saw from the body of the knife. This I will talk about today.

The two brands got a completely different angle and this actually influence the comfort of the use, this also influence speed and more. I did discover that the Wenger saw and angle made it more easy for me to cut planks on a very straight line. Maybe this is different from user to user? The Wenger saw is more comfortable because of size and angle.

The Victorinox got an advantage when one needs to hollow out a wood material, I have tested this very well and it is a superb quality on every aspect.

A Swiss Army Knife is a high technology tool and the wood saw for use on wood, bone or rope is really made for harder use. The 130mm and 111mm tools are more made for professional use, they are very well made.

Angle from the body of the Wenger knife

I have a feeling that Victorinox used this angle on the tool to make it more difficult  for it to accidental close, i may be wrong.

When Wenger introduced the large 130mm category in Norway it quickly received a nice reputation for a very good quality outdoors product. I learned from professionals many years ago how a wood saw with some caliber can do tasks faster than a fixed blade ever could do. The 130mm category also included a large blade and other large functions. It became a product that actually could replace a fixed blade in many situations. This all depends on knowledge and what people prefer.

The large Wenger SAKs had ingenuity in the philosophy and design. I learned from professionals about combination philosophies. This I took into my heart and it is knowledge I will never forget. Some will always have a fixed blade as the main knife while others will use a folding knife for everything. Instead of saying what is the best I learned from both and I never rule out any traditions or places in the world. It is a smart thing to learn some from traditions across the world because knives are important anywhere. Norway is one of the big axe countries with traditions back to the beginning. In the history books you may learn how we already in the Bronze-age had a sophisticated culture while some are misinformed about our culture. Here the axe was and is used for the hardest tasks in the outdoors. The wood saw can for sure be used in combination with an axe, knife or other tools. The comfortable, relaxed and silent philosophy is the correct one. On the picture below today you can see a very beautiful Muela from Spain, A very nice Helle and the 130mm Wenger wood saw.

While I am at it today I can write some more and show one more picture too. On this picture you can some of the Strømeng KS8 with finger guard that is used by the military and for people that prefer a guard. “Same” knives are very traditional and can be used as a versatile knife for a lot of tasks. For sure it could be used in combination with a large SAK saw. The “Same” knife is with carbon steel which means it is not stainless. On the picture you can see the blade on the Helle Jegermester with 12C27 stainless. It is a beautiful blade.

06.03.2021 Axe

There are limitations for what the wood saw you find on the 130mm can do. I am a type of person that is more on the water and I use the woods for polypore hunting and just to enjoy myself. Still I know how to use an axe and why this is such an important tool for people. I would never take a living tree because I do not need to. Sweden impresses me a lot with axes and I can clearly see the history unfold with them. The advantage with a wood saw is more than enough for the normal things. It is there the Wenger introduction and solution is a stroke of genius. In the Nordic countries there are several nice traditions with tools for the outdoors and crafts. Here in the Nordic countries we have many Hunters that got much knowledge about the outdoors and tools. Sometimes it is unavoidable not to use axes. With such an impressive tool you are a force of nature.

The 120mm continued after the New Ranger. They had Patent and not pat pend. I say pat pend first then patent next. But! Wenger did many variations! :)

The old Ranger 120mm is from 1991, on my 1993 it is pat pend I have seen it on 1991 too and Swissbuck as well! Wenger can be a minefield because of variations

It is a superb question. Wenger used different stamps, some because of european laws. Usually the quality and steel is the same. Which is first? Not sure.
