SAK Hobbies

There is no doubt that there are many different areas for new collectors to find. The different products made from 1884 until today are so many that it is fully possible to find a special area for collectors. If you like to collect the well-known categories or find a new is there.

The three main factors for collectors are common to all. History, Evolution and Products are factors we use and research. All over the world are collectors and enthusiasts that have done great work and done personal sacrifice to learn more and make it easier for people. Different milestones or time windows are part of the history. We can divide history into two parts with the companies and the collectors side or view.

The Evolution can get pretty advanced to learn and I have been surprised many times by people around the world and just how much they know. Many impressive people out there! The Evolution can be small variations done with the more modern times and materials + machines. Most important is the key changes done with design and new functions made. The Evolution can also be part of the innovative inventions done to make the Swiss Army Knives or continue it to have an iconic status as the most intelligent knife in the world. Victorinox and Wenger are the SAKs we collect mainly.

The products from 1884 and until today are many, extremely many! There so many categories that it is an everlasting hobby.

It is important for me as a collector and user to have full knowledge on some products not only with evolution but also the use.

Have fun with Your hobby and be a part of it.

The Wenger Evolution handle scales rebooted SAKs in modern times.

Swiss Products update

The SAKs from 1884 until today are many. It is important as a quality factor to remember that the Swiss deliveres products that got quality and the iconic design. It is a versatile and helpful knife for everyone. It can be called a Swiss product and therefore this factor contain many secondary factors.

Functions update

It can be interesting to discuss SAKs and see who prefer the backside phillips instead of the corkscrew. I have explained some on how the corkscrew can be used for more than opening a bottle of wine. Still i am not sure myself if i would choose the corkscrew over phillips. This can also be different from America to Europe! Did you know this?

evolution update

The introduction of the Evolution is extra interesting to me and all the products that did follow.

Since 2004 we have seen far more handle scales than on the picture below. On the picture are the main development from 2004.

2004(evolution), 2007( evogrip and new rangers), 2009(rangergrip) and 2010(evowood)

Titanium update

The Evolution was a historic change and it did start a new milestone with SAKs. If we look upon the knives then the Evolution and the New Rangers became a big success.

A new invention and a completely different design came with the Titanium line. This line quickly became famous and every Wenger enthusiast knows about it. The blade itself is the controversy for many. It is a very innovative and high quality SAK. This line or more different products should have been produced. The complete merging with Victorinox may have ended this new development but we do not know the full story so this is for the time being uncertain.

30.07.2021 Journeyman

Here you see my latest Wenger 85mm SAK. This is the Journeyman 1 49 11 and the condition is as new. The interesting factor here is that I am almost 100% sure this SAK is from 1992. The Journeyman is very nice because it got a selection of function that maybe is even more useful today. Many prefer to have pliers in the selection of functions for their EDC. Another useful detail is the backside tang stamp with connecting lines in the Wenger name. This mean this type of stamp was around in 1992.

31.07.2021 Connecting letters

There is a reason for why I avoid getting too deep into the backside tang stamp with connecting lines in the Wenger name and stamp. In general I have placed the tree knife logo and backside tang Stamp to be from the late 1980s (1988).

When Wenger ended the connecting lines in the letters is actually very difficult to be sure about because I found it used in the late 1990s! This one I leave up to others to be sure about.

Most of you know about the new backside tang stamp Wenger used with no connecting lines. Wenger could have used both from time to time. This means I would be hesitant to place a 100% date on it. The type with no connecting lines I found probably to last in general until 2007, from 2004 less. I do not believe it ended completely until 2013.

The 120mm continued after the New Ranger. They had Patent and not pat pend. I say pat pend first then patent next. But! Wenger did many variations! :)

The old Ranger 120mm is from 1991, on my 1993 it is pat pend I have seen it on 1991 too and Swissbuck as well! Wenger can be a minefield because of variations

It is a superb question. Wenger used different stamps, some because of european laws. Usually the quality and steel is the same. Which is first? Not sure.
